Opis projekta
Istraživanje percepcije i načina prikazivanja povijesti i u svjetskim razmjerima tek je u začecima. Najbolje su istražene umjetnički utjecaji i teme obično vezane uz mitologiju, glasovite povijesne ličnosti i događaje starogrčke i rimske civilizacije. Takvi motivi najbolje su vidljivi u književnosti, klasičnoj glazbi, likovnoj umjetnosti (slikarstvu, kiparstvu) i arhitekturi posebice od razdoblja humanizma i renesanse do suvremenog doba. Pritom treba posebno naglasiti umjetničke stilove poput neoklasicizama, romantizma, historicizma, orijentalizma, egiptomanije i art decoa čije teme često posežu za motivima antike.
Pritom posebno treba istaknuti djelatnost dvije velikih međunarodnih udruga Association for the Study of Travel in Egypt and Near East (ASTENE) i Egypt and Austria koje već gotovo trideset godina istražuju percepciju povijesti u putničkim zapisima te utjecaj drevnih civilizacija Egipta i starog Istoka na umjetničke izražaje od antike do sredine 20. stoljeća.
Pritom posebno treba naglasiti činjenicu da neka suvremena umjetnička područja gotovo uopće nisu istražena niti sagledana (npr. suvremena glazba, strip, video i računalne igre, moda i sl.).
Interdisciplinarnim istraživanjem planirano je utvrditi načine percepcije i recepcije događaja i glasovitih povijesnih ličnosti cjelokupne ljudske prošlosti u modernoj i suvremenoj kulturi kroz razne medije. Pritom će se istražiti načini prikazivanja prošlosti u kazališnoj umjetnosti (drama, opera), klasičnoj i suvremenoj glazbi, plesu, arhitekturi, likovnoj umjetnosti (skulptura, slikarstvo), dekorativnoj umjetnosti (unutrašnjem uređenju prostora, izradi povijesnog namještaja, posuđa i sl.), povijesnim romanima, stripovima, filmskoj umjetnosti i televiziji, video i računalnim igrama, modi, putopisnim zapisima i dnevnicima, muzejskim zbirkama i kolekcionarstvu starina, prezentaciji baštine i oživjeloj povijesti.
Svaka radna skupina dobiti će zadatak utvrditi dominantne povijesne teme pojedinih povijesnih razdoblja te načine percepcije i recepcije povijesnih događaja i ličnosti tijekom njih.
- koje povijesne ličnosti i događaji se najčešće prikazuju u modernoj i suvremenoj kulturi;
- kako i na koji način se mijenja percepcija i recepcija povijesti tijekom vremena;
- koliki je utjecaj društvenog okruženja i politike u percepciji određenih povijesnih događaja i povijesnih ličnosti;
- kolika je razlika između stvarne povijesne zbilje temeljene na povijesnim izvorima i mašte stvaratelja u različitim umjetničkim djelima;
- postoje li geografske razlike u prikazivanju povijesti;
- u kojim vidovima moderne i suvremene kulture se mogu pronaći veći odnosno manji utjecaji povijesnih tema.
Diseminacija rezultata projektnog istraživanja planirana je kroz planirane muzejske izložbe, međunarodne konferencije, znanstvene članke, autorske i uredničke knjige, kataloge izložbi te razne oblike popularizacije znanosti (tribine, javna predavanja, članke u časopisima i web portalu projekta).
Project Description
Research on the perception and modes of representing history on a global scale is still in its infancy. The best‑explored areas concern artistic influences and themes typically associated with mythology, renowned historical figures, and events of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Such motifs are most visible in literature, classical music, visual arts (painting, sculpture), and architecture, especially from the periods of Humanism and the Renaissance to the modern era. Particular emphasis should be placed on artistic styles such as Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Historicism, Orientalism, Egyptomania, and Art Deco, whose themes frequently draw on motifs from antiquity. In recent decades, greater attention has also been devoted to the representation of ancient and Egyptian history in film, whereas films depicting figures and events from other historical periods have been far less frequently analyzed.
Better‑developed research relates to the emergence of travel culture and published travelogues and diaries of travellers who, from the early modern period onward, visited the Eastern Mediterranean, Italy, Greece, and the Ottoman Empire. In this context, the activities of two major international associations should be highlighted: the Association for the Study of Travel in Egypt and the Near East (ASTENE) and Egypt and Austria, which for almost thirty years have been studying the perception of history in travel writings and the influence of the ancient civilizations of Egypt and the Ancient Near East on artistic expression from antiquity to the mid‑20th century.
The first monograph, Global Perception of Ancient Egypt in Modern Culture, is currently in preparation. It examines the perception of a specific segment of world history—in this case, ancient Egyptian civilization. Two members of this project team (M. Tomorad and D. Rafaelić) are participating in the preparation of this comprehensive volume.
Scholarly works dealing with the perception of history and the modes of representing history from the Middle Ages to the present are extremely rare, and no synthetic studies exist. Only a few monographic treatments of films with ancient or Western themes can be found, along with occasional studies on decorative arts and interior design that primarily explore the influence of ancient civilizations during the “long 19th century” and the Art Deco movement.
Below is a list of rare works and syntheses that contain some of the basic methodological principles to be applied in this project. Most of them examine the influence of ancient Egyptian history and culture in modern and contemporary culture, its perception, cultural impact, and modes of representation.
From all of the above, it may be concluded that the perception and representation of most of human history in modern and contemporary culture has scarcely been examined or analyzed in detail. It is particularly important to emphasize that some contemporary artistic fields have hardly been explored or considered at all (e.g., contemporary music, comics, video and computer games, fashion, etc.).
Since only a few works currently exist that address the representation of history from a historical perspective, the project’s methodology is largely based on the recent international project Global Perception of Ancient Egypt in Modern Culture (2023–present). The research methodology will rely on comparative analysis across various humanities and social sciences (history, archaeology, art history, literature, music history, etc.), the analysis of historical sources, and the study of specific forms of representation (media). Sources will include preserved historical documents, scholarly literature, archival and museum materials, works of art, and historical heritage in Croatia and abroad. Comparative analysis of all types of sources will make it possible to identify modes of perception and reception of history in modern and contemporary culture, as well as to determine the influence of fiction, the role of politics and society, and the ways in which particular segments of history are represented. Special attention will be devoted to the perception and reception of historical figures and major events that have shaped modern views of history. Upon completion of the first four‑year phase of the project, the plan is to compile a catalogue of key themes and historical figures whose representations dominate modern and contemporary culture and to assess the authenticity of these portrayals.
The historical research will primarily focus on works produced from the 18th century to the present. The main reason for this chronological framework is that, with the Enlightenment, Baroque, and Rococo periods, various forms of historical representation began to develop more significantly, forming the basis of modern and contemporary culture. Before that time, representations of history were largely grounded in humanistic views of the Christian foundations of the world and the classical influence of ancient history. With the emergence of archaeological research in the first half of the 18th century and the growing interest in travel—especially to Italy, Greece, the Near East, and Egypt—tourism gradually developed (particularly in the second half of the 19th century), increasing interest in historical representation. From the period of Humanism onward, urban centres began to adorn themselves with copies of monuments inspired by earlier cultures, while the influence of ancient civilizations shaped numerous musical and literary works inspired by historical events and biographies of historical figures. This mode of representation has continued to the present day. Naturally, the representation of events—and especially of individuals—varied significantly from period to period, depending on social and political contexts, and this aspect will be analyzed in detail within the project.
Through interdisciplinary research, the project aims to determine the modes of perception and reception of events and prominent historical figures from the entirety of human history in modern and contemporary culture across various media. It will examine representations of the past in theatre (drama, opera), classical and contemporary music, dance, architecture, visual arts (sculpture, painting), decorative arts (interior design, historical furniture, tableware, etc.), historical novels, comics, film and television, video and computer games, fashion, travel writing and diaries, museum collections and antiquarian collecting, heritage presentation, and living history. It will also explore the influence of historical presentation on travel culture and tourism development, contemporary sport, and the emergence of pseudoscience and historical mysteries.
By analyzing different forms of representing historical events and figures, the project will identify key themes, determine which events and figures dominate contemporary popular culture, trace changes in perception and reception over time, and assess the authenticity of historical portrayals and the role of creative imagination.
During the research process, principal investigators and external collaborators will be divided into smaller teams (working groups) tasked with identifying the main modes of representation across various artistic forms and modern and contemporary cultural practices. Particular attention will be paid to the role of social and historical contexts and the time of creation of individual works. Each working group will determine the dominant historical themes of specific periods and the modes of perception and reception of historical events and figures. It will also be important to assess the influence of politics and political propaganda on historical perception, especially during the late 19th and 20th centuries. One of the fundamental goals of the project is to determine the impact of contemporary historical revisionism on the perception of history (e.g., in former communist and totalitarian states over the past thirty‑five years, and in the United States and the Middle East over the past decade).
The results of the project should answer the following questions:
– how history was represented in specific periods – which historical figures and events are most frequently depicted in modern and contemporary culture – how the perception and reception of history changes over time – the extent to which social context and politics influence the perception of certain historical events and figures – the difference between actual historical reality based on sources and the imagination of creators in various artistic works – whether geographical differences exist in the representation of history – in which forms of modern and contemporary culture historical themes exert greater or lesser influence.
Dissemination of project results is planned through museum exhibitions, international conferences, scholarly articles, authored and edited books, exhibition catalogues, and various forms of science popularization (public lectures, panels, magazine articles, and the project’s web portal).
