Mladen Tomorad rođen je u Zagrebu 1971. Diplomirao (Šauabtiji u Dalmaciji i Panoniji, 1997.) i magistrirao (Egipatske starine u hrvatskim povijesnim znanostima, 2001.) je na Odsjeku za povijest, a doktorirao (Model računalne obrade i prezentacije staroegipatskih predmeta u muzejskim zbirkama u Hrvatskoj, 2006.) na Odsjeku za informacijske znanosti (muzeologija) Filozofskog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu. Završio je studij egiptologije na Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester (Shabtis from the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, Croatia, 2009.). Od 2000. do 2011. bio je zaposlen kao znanstveni novak na Odsjeku za povijest Filozofskog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu, a od travnja 2011. do veljače 2020. radi kao docent na Odjelu za povijest Hrvatskih studija Sveučilišta u Zagrebu. U ožujku 2020. izabran je u zvanje izvanrednog profesora na Fakultetu hrvatskih studija Sveučilišta u Zagrebu.
Stručno se bavi poviješću starog Egipta i općom poviješću starog vijeka, muzeologijom, primjenama informacijskih tehnologija u povijesnim istraživanjima i nastavi povijesti, poviješću Sjedinjenih Američkih Država od nastanka prvih kolonija do kraja 19. stoljeća te popularnom kulturom modernog doba (muzika i film). Sudjelovao je na brojnim znanstvenim skupovima u zemlji i inozemstvu. Član je Hrvatskog nacionalnog odbora za povijesne znanosti, International Council of Museums (ICOM), CIPEG – International Committe for Egyptology i International Association of Egyptologist.
Od početka 1993. do danas objavio je preko 600 znanstvenih i stručnih radova s područja povijesnih i informacijskih znanosti, veći broj udžbenika i priručnika za osnovnu školu, gimnaziju i sveučilište.
Objavio je slijedeće znanstvene knjige: Egipat u Hrvatskoj: egipatske starine u hrvatskoj znanosti i kulturi (Zagreb: Barbat, 2003.), Staroegipatska civilizacija sv. 1: Povijest i kultura starog Egipta (Zagreb: Hrvatski studiji, 2016.), Staroegipatska civilizacija sv. 2: Uvod u egiptološke studije (Zagreb: Hrvatski studiji, 2017.), Egipatsko blago u Osijeku – hrvatska fascinacija starim Egiptom (Osijek: Arheološki muzej, 2019. s Marinom Kovač), Egypt in Croatia (Oxford: Archaeopress, 2019., s još sedam kolegica), Egipat u Hrvatskoj: hrvatska fascinacija starim Egiptom (Zagreb: Fakultet hrvatskih studija, 2020.), Stari Egipat: Povijest i kultura (Zagreb: Školska knjiga, 2023.), Stara povijest (Zagreb: Školska knjiga, 2025.), Povijest Sjedinjenih Američkih Država: Od prvih kolonija do svjetske velesile (Zagreb: Školska knjiga, 2026.).
Također je urednik slijedećih knjiga: The research of the history and culture of the Ancient Near East in Croatia (Saarbrücken: Lambert Academic Publishing, 2014.), A History of Research into Ancient Egyptian Culture Conducted in Southeast Europe (Oxford: Archaeopress, 2015.), Egypt 2015: Perpectives of research – Proceedings of the Seventh European Conference of Egyptologists (2nd-7th June 2015, Zagreb – Croatia) (Oxford: Archaeopress, 2017.), Slavne žene stare povijesti: životi žena u društvima starog svijeta (Zagreb: Meridijani-Hrvatski studiji, 2018.), Egypt and Austria XII: A Current Research (Oxford: Archaeopress, 2020.) i Slavne žene stare povijesti 2: Recepcija mitskih i povijesnih ličnosti kroz povijest (Zagreb: Fakultet hrvatskih studija, 2026.).
Bio je glavni sam urednik web portala Croato-Aegyptica Electronica [www.croato-aegyptica.hr; 2004.-2014.], a trenutno je urednik online povijesnog časopisa Stara povijest [www.starapovijest.eu]. Također je osmislio web stranice Odsjeka za povijest Filozofskog fakulteta u Zagrebu (2001.) te Odsjeka za povijest Hrvatskih studija Sveučilišta u Zagrebu (2013.).
Institucionalni istraživački projekt provodi se u sklopu Nacionalnog plana oporavka i otpornosti (NPOO) 2021. – 2026., sufinanciran iz izvora 581 – Mehanizam za oporavak i otpornost.

Mladen Tomorad was born in Zagreb in 1971. He completed his undergraduate studies (Shabtis in Dalmatia and Pannonia, 1997) and his master’s degree (Egyptian Antiquities in Croatian Historical Scholarship, 2001) at the Department of History, and earned his PhD (A Model for Digital Processing and Presentation of Ancient Egyptian Objects in Museum Collections in Croatia, 2006) at the Department of Information Sciences (Museology), Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. He completed his Egyptology studies at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester (Shabtis from the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, Croatia, 2009). From 2000 to 2011 he worked as a research assistant at the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, and from April 2011 to February 2020 he was employed as Assistant Professor at the Department of History, Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb. In March 2020 he was elected Associate Professor at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb.
His professional work focuses on the history of Ancient Egypt and the general history of the ancient world, museology, applications of information technologies in historical research and history education, the history of the United States from the establishment of the first colonies to the end of the 19th century, and modern popular culture (music and film). He has participated in numerous scholarly conferences in Croatia and abroad. He is a member of the Croatian National Committee for Historical Sciences, the International Council of Museums (ICOM), CIPEG – International Committee for Egyptology, and the International Association of Egyptologists.
Since early 1993 he has published more than 600 scholarly and professional works in the fields of history and information sciences, as well as numerous textbooks and manuals for primary schools, gymnasiums, and universities.
He has published the following scholarly books: Egypt in Croatia: Egyptian Antiquities in Croatian Scholarship and Culture (Zagreb: Barbat, 2003); Ancient Egyptian Civilization, Vol. 1: History and Culture of Ancient Egypt (Zagreb: Croatian Studies, 2016); Ancient Egyptian Civilization, Vol. 2: Introduction to Egyptological Studies (Zagreb: Croatian Studies, 2017); Egyptian Treasure in Osijek – Croatian Fascination with Ancient Egypt (Osijek: Archaeological Museum, 2019, with Marina Kovač); Egypt in Croatia (Oxford: Archaeopress, 2019, with seven co‑authors); Egypt in Croatia: Croatian Fascination with Ancient Egypt (Zagreb: Faculty of Croatian Studies, 2020); Ancient Egypt: History and Culture (Zagreb: Školska knjiga, 2023); Ancient History (Zagreb: Školska knjiga, 2025); History of the United States: From the First Colonies to a Global Power (Zagreb: Školska knjiga, 2026).

He was the founding editor‑in‑chief of the web portal Croato‑Aegyptica Electronica (www.croato-aegyptica.hr; 2004–2014), and is currently the editor of the online historical journal Stara povijest (www.starapovijest.eu). He also designed the websites of the Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (2001), and the Department of History, Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb (2013).
The institutional research project is implemented as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) 2021–2026, co‑financed from source 581 – Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.
